Mental Health First Aid

Mental Health First Aid (MHFA) is the help offered to a person developing a mental health issue, experiencing a worsening of an existing mental health issue or in a mental health crisis. The first aid is given until appropriate professional help is received or until the crisis appears to have been resolved.

Would you know how to help?

Aim of this course

We all have mental health, just as we all have physical health. Mental ill health can strike at any time and can affect everyone.

Although things are improving, stigma still exists around mental ill health. As a society, we don't tend to know how to take care of our mental health like we do our physical health. This means that people may not know how to support a friend, family member or colleague experiencing a mental health issue, or where to go for help with their own mental health.

At the end of this course, you will have learned about:
  • Spot the early signs of a mental health issue

  • Feel confident in how to offer and provide initial help to a person experiencing a mental health issue

  • Preserve life where a person may be at risk of harm to themselves or others

  • Help stop mental ill health from getting worse

  • Promote recovery of good mental health

  • Guide someone towards appropriate treatment and other sources of help

  • Understand the stigma that exists around mental health
